Joyce has been a teacher in China since 2012. After coming to the United States, she received a Masters Degree in Teaching from University of Southern California and a Child Development Site Supervisor Permit. She has various teaching experiences in public, private, preschool and after school programs with children aged from 2 to 17. She is passionate in working with families and coworkers to build a nurturing community where children can feel free to explore, create, and learn Chinese culture.

Xiao joined the PlayThrive in July 2020 after getting her master’s degree in Educational Technology, where she explored how to apply technology into language learning both effectively and productively. Prior to her study, she had been a public elementary school lead teacher (multiple subject credential) in China for 11 years. Since Xiao moved to the Bay Area, she taught Stanford students HSK 5-6, worked with preschoolers via the play-based way, and shared Chinese culture with middle school students in Summit Denali. She’s passionate about teaching language skills and developing the whole child through project-based learning. She’s also an avid runner and enjoys traveling.

Jenny Ye Sheng
Jenny has a Montessori teaching credential, Bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Development, 8 years experience teaching preschoolers and 3 years experience teaching in after school and summer camps. As an educator, she knows how important it is to focus on the “whole child,” this means that her lesson plans incorporate ideas to stimulate the child’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. In her leisure time, Jenny enjoys playing guitar and reading classic literatures.

First Grade Teacher
Kelly has been a well-loved teacher at PlayThrive for 4 years teaching in kindergarten and first grade classes. She cares deeply about children’s growth socially and academically. She enjoys connecting students from various backgrounds and bridging their Mandarin conversation over a variety of topics. Kelly was a graphic designer for 9 years and we benefit from her neatly created teaching material. In her spare time, she loves sharing good food and good times with friends and family.

Head of School
Karen is passionate about building a positive learning community in Redwood City where children strengthens Mandarin language skills while exploring possibilities in themselves and in the world. With a love for nature, arts, and 10 years of prior experience in engineering, she enjoys the process bringing STEAM and project-based learning to PlayThrive. She deeply appreciates the vibrant Orion-PlayThrive community and how it helps raising her trilingual family. When she’s not growing PlayThrive, she can be found growing her garden, being silly with her 2 children, playing board games, dancing, cooking, and camping.
